In 2015, she decided to move to Cleveland to work for a caterer and other restaurants to build a clientele for baked goods. While living in the South, she noticed there were always great places to go for biscuits and biscuit sandwiches. Shawnda grew up in Cincinnati, went to school in Tallahassee, FL, and lived in various places in the South. She started her career in Sales and Ops Management after school, but she knew she always wanted to open a bakery and café. Her baking continued throughout life when she decided to perfect her trade and worked at bakeries and cafes to learn the technique and trade secrets further. She would always bake goods and ship her goodies to family and friends. She started making desserts all the time as a child in elementary school. This included using fresh ingredients like fresh peaches and making the crust from scratch. Shawnda’s passion for baking started as a child when her mom taught her how to make peach cobbler. I had the opportunity to sit down with her and hear about her journey in opening the Café and running a small business in these challenging times. Her personality was infectious so I wanted to learn more about Shawnda and her Café. Upon entering the café, we were greeted with a smile and very friendly service by a person who just happened to be the café owner, Shawnda Moye. If you haven’t been, you need to stop in for breakfast and/or lunch or just meet up for coffee and pastries. To my surprise, I was introduced to this hidden gem at Tyler Village located at Superior and 36 th Street. He recommended meeting at The Bake Shop and Café at Tyler Village. I recently made plans with a neighborhood friend to meet for coffee and chat about a community project. Will wait awhile to return. As part of our mission, The Cleveland Observer seeks to uplift and support minority-owned businesses in or near Cleveland, Ohio. Have noticed a huge change here going on. Always a choice of potatoes, biscuits, toast or pancakes, so food still good, but when dining and seeing what is going on, not so good. Also had the Chorizo omelet with plenty of chorizo, salsa, avocado cheese. a piece of cheese melted on top, thought maybe it would be a nice drizzle cheese, 2 biscuits which are big but did notice they were not as fluffy and a bit soggy this time but still had the flavor, very tasty homemade jam. Had the meat lovers omelet stuffed with ham, bacon, sausage. But they still have all the favorites and the food is still good. The menu is downsized a bit to accommodate an easier paper menu right now. Seemed no one really had a good handle on what to do, just every one do it. The cleaning of the tables was very fast spray and wipe. Had the entire staff running everywhere, greeter, seater, table cleaner, cashier and stopping at tables when customers were asking for things, all one person. Had to keep waving to someone to get us coffee, jam and ketchup not on the plate we asked for while ordering and was written down, a to go box that I could not get. Our server only came by to take our order and give us the check. and even going to the kitchen asking for refills or mentioning lack of service. Even seeing customers heading to the server station looking for napkins and things. People waiting and had tables and booths that were dirty and not getting worked on. Went in between breakfast and lunch had a good amount of people seated. Mexican Restaurants for Families in Surprise.
